Intro: What is GDPR?

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a regulation in EU law on the protection of natural persons with regards to the processing of personal data.

- Processing:

Processing of personal data refers to any operation performed on this personal data (whether those operations are automated or not).

- Personal data:

Any information related to a natural person, or ‘Data Subject’, that can be used to directly or indirectly identify the person. It can be anything from a name, a photo, an email address, bank details, posts on social networking websites, medical information, or a computer IP address.

GDPR distinguishes two types of entities which have obligations according to GDPR:

- Controller: the entity that determines the purposes, conditions and means of the processing of personal data
- Processor: an entity which processes personal data on behalf of the controller. The processor keeps records of this processing in a register.

The Controller is primary responsible for taking actions in the context of GDPR. The responsibility of a Processor is determined in an agreement, issued by the Controller.
